Tutoring services

Studying science or mathematics can feel like someone handed you a puzzle with half of the pieces missing. It is my mission to fill in the gaps for you, and get you to achieve an understanding where things click and make sense again. Together we will take the time to pick you up from where you are and to bring you where you want to be.
I offer tutoring in Physics and Mathematics at university level. Further I provide any science-related subject, including Computing and Chemistry, for National 5/GCSE and above. My hourly rate is £60.
When you hire my teaching service, you get:
- tutoring and guidance that are passionate, qualified, and experienced, from an astrophysics PhD with five years in teaching
- a casual, open, and stimulating learning environment which is centered on your progress and going at your speed — there are way too many classrooms in which one person does all the talking and this is not one of them.
- one-off or regular sessions that are tailor-made to your needs and wishes: we can deepen your understanding of course material, work through homework problems, or run an exam prep bootcamp.
- additional homework-style problems or riddles that exercise your thinking muscles
- strategic and tactic problem-solving skills for exam or coursework- style exercises
- bespoke courses designed to your field of interest, including for Adult Learners
- in-person tutoring at your chosen study location or home within Edinburgh, provided it is feasible for me to travel — if in doubt, you can ask me! I have also made excellent experiences with remote teaching which is open to all my clients.
- everyday online chat for quick questions
- auf Wunsch auch Deutsch als Unterrichtssprache — ich bin deutscher Muttersprachler.

About my experience

Hi, I'm Dr Robert Schuhmann! I followed my passion for understanding the world around me into science to become a cosmologist. Talking about scientific concepts and their connections, and passing on the torch, is just the best.
Through my master's degree at Perimeter Institute I have acquired a strong background in theoretical and mathematical physics. In my PhD at UCL I focused on statistical methods for astronomical data analysis of big cosmology surveys. I worked as a postdoctoral research assistant for 2.5 years on projects across weak gravitational lensing and supernova cosmology, with a stronger focus on machine learning methods. I also worked as a data scientist for the private sector for a few months.
In my five years of experience as full-time private tutor for physics and mathematics I have worked with many students on a variety of subjects, including the following:
- pretty much any Physics lecture from the University of Edinburgh undergraduate curriculum, especially exam prep for the dreaded 3rd year track
- mathematical, statistical, and computational methods for Science
- National 5 exam coaching for Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computing
- bespoke courses and book clubs for Adult Learners: introduction to quantum field theory, philosophical foundations of quantum theory, introduction to analysis
- bespoke courses for gifted students at National 5/Higher level: astronomy and cosmology, special and general relativity
- I also worked as a classroom TA for physical cosmology and electromagnetic field theory.
If you are a student facing a daunting exam season, or a parent of such a student, or an adult learner with a burning interest for some topic in theoretical physics: drop me an email and we'll chat!
some client feedback
I asked Robert to tutor me on advanced topics in the foundations of quantum mechanics, including Bohmian mechanics, many-worlds, and objective collapse theories. He was outstanding: patient, flexible, and highly creative in his explanations. Even subtle conceptual issues became clearer through his careful, engaging style. Although my focus was quantum foundations, it's evident that his outstanding knowledge of physics makes him an excellent tutor across all areas of the discipline. Strongly recommend!

Rob has been brilliant for my son. He very quickly understood what my son needed and more besides. They now have a great relationship: the learning flexes and has gone beyond physics into maths and computing. Rob's efforts were a critical input into my son's NAT5 success!

Have been working with Rob for around a month now. Fantastic tutor, his adjustable, upbeat manner has been hugely helpful already. He has helped me improve my confidence since taking 2 years off studying with his patient coaching. Would recommend for anyone needing help on a Physics degree!
